With Vacations Canceled, Families Get Away at CJH

This year we’ve heard so many wonderful stories about businesses and organizations reimagining their products and services to stay relevant and continue to serve despite the pandemic. Carol Joy Holling Camp, Conference and Retreat Center is one of those beautiful stories.

Without the ability to serve guest groups or campers, we reimagined how we could still safely provide significant experiences and serve families with gracious hospitality this summer. From this, the CJH Family Getaway was born.

Throughout the last 40 years, we’ve seen first-hand the impact time away in God’s beautiful creation has on the mental health of all guests—young campers, and “seasoned” guests, alike. So, we formed the CJH Family Getaway program to fill the need of families who need time together, but away from home.

Families who have been forced to forgo the family vacations they had planned, have the opportunity to get away and reconnect with one another—while still physically distancing from others. CJH Family Getaway guests stay in our hotel-style Swanson Retreat Center, and we deliver their meals to their room. We have 317 acres of trails to explore, a lake for canoeing, kayaking, paddle boating, and games like human foosball, volleyball, 9-square in the air, and more for some friendly competition.

“The CDC recommends coping with COVID-19-related stress by taking a break from the news and social media; caring for your body through stretching/exercising and eating healthy meals; and making time to unwind and connect with others,” NLOM Director of Programs, Korey Breutzmann shared. “The CJH Family Getaway program is the perfect response to these recommendations. It enables families to be renewed in a peaceful and beautiful setting.”

More than 87 families have enjoyed a getaway so far this summer.

The CJH Family Getaway is available through Labor Day, and we plan to update the programming for Advent Family Getaways between November 27 and December 24. More information is available at CJHCenter.org/ familygetaway or by calling Dana at 402-944-2544.
